The Kayanza province is one of the best coffee producing regions in Burundi. Located in the north of the country, it is renowned as the water source of the Nile River. During the season.
During the harvest season, Gahahe has the capacity to process more than 600 tons of coffee. This station receives cherries from more than 1250 local coffee farmers distributed in 16 neighboring hills. The washing station is equipped with 10 fermentation tanks, 4 cherry selection tables, 2 soaking tanks, a drying area with 180 african beds and 18 shaded pre-drying beds.
Due to Kayanza's high altitude, the coffee grown there has a high level of acidity mixed with a fruit- like sweetness. Bold, fruity coffees are a hallmark of the East African flavor profile.
RED BOURBON
Most coffee grown in Burundi is of the Red Bourbon variety.
Bourbon takes its name from Bourbon Island (now La Réunion), where it was introduced by French missionaries who had taken a few coffee seeds from Yemen in the 1700s. Along with Typica, Bourbon accounts for the basis of most of the world's coffee production.
GAHAHE
The name 'Gahahe' comes from the Igihahe trees that were once found in this region. The branches of these trees resemble cacti and grow in round shape, so they are more commonly known as the "candelabra tree.”
